Name: Nathalie Nsengiyumva
Position: Medical Coordinator
With CCHIPs since: November 2009
Project Update:
The medical element of the CCHIPs project aims at improving nurses’ skills and knowledge through leading weekly trainings, monitoring activities, and implementing improved medical processes. For the last two months, with the help of the Kabere Health Centre nursing staff, I have been implementing the improved wards round process at the health centre. I work with nurses as we review of the previous existing process and help them to recognize and acknowledge the weaknesses of the existing process. Sometimes the existing process is more convenient for the nurses, but it is less productive from a quality standpoint. And finally the nurses must accept the impact of the new improved process on the quality of care that patients receive. The above mentioned activities of implementation of the new process are achieved through a long and ever persisting process of assisting, mentoring and monitoring of nurses at the health centre. Currently, we are in working on the actual change of attitudes and adopting the new improved process. Each day of the week that I do wards rounds with health staff; I am always fascinated by how much their involvement increases over time. They are learning to find other motivation for their work like a healthy child after two days of hospitalization.
Other Projects: Work with Management Systems Coordinator on Pharmacy Management in order to develop a system to better organize, distribute and monitor the usage of all health centre drugs.
Highlight of the Week: Bisoke hiking with Eli and Lauren, the hard physical exercise, the sliding ground and the cool freezing & rainy weather were a perfect match for such beautiful day.
