ABOUT PROJECT SHINGIRO
With the support of the Musanze District and the Rwanda Ministry of Health, CCHIPs launched at Shingiro in late January of 2008. Located 8,500 ft. above sea level on the upslopes of the Virunga Mountains, Shingiro serves a population of over 30,000 distributed throughout 38 villages and currently treats an average of 1,000 patients a month.
The centre was devastated by the 1994 genocide. Without water, electricity, sufficient medical supplies and equipment, and proper sanitation practices, Shingiro had difficulty providing even basic care.
Moreover, the centre was lacking in experienced health staff. Before CCHIPs arrived, no doctor had ever visited the clinic and the nursing staff consisted entirely of A2 nurses with only highschool degrees.
